    gderamel | Training: Jack Ardoyno

Anyone who's about to start flying (for the first time) their Seawind or isn't quite comfortable on land or water I HIGHLY RECOMMEND contacting JACK ARDOYNO to get trained. Trust me - you'll get your money's worth. You couldn't find a more pleasant, friendly and certainly knowledgeable person than Jack.

He flew in Friday night into Rhode Island (Newport's my base) and left this afternoon (Tuesday). We spent most of Saturday reconfiguring things on the plane: disabled the flaperons, removed the fuel check-valves, hot wired the bilge pump, and some other stuff. Changes, neither my A&P or me would have ever known to make on our own, but changes, I now realize are ESSENTIAL to safe Seawind operations.

We spent ALL day Sunday and ALL day Monday doing a lot of touch and goes - mostly trying to break my habit of flaring on landings. Did a few simulated engine outs, which were eye opening (all about energy preservation). The water operations were nothing like what I had anticipated. I heard about the dreaded Seawind porpoise, but with his patient and courageous oversight we licked those too!

It's a fantastic aircraft: in the air AND on the water. It's sad that its got such a dark cloud above it. In my experience - albeit limited - it doesn't deserve any bad stigma. It's my hope that anyone reading this post who's been on the fence about getting in the water or intimidated by the plane - CALL or EMAIL JACK!!

I had approximately 5 hours in a Piper Super Cub on floats (12 years ago) and ZERO in Seawinds, but today I'm comfortable and safe on both LAND and WATER. Zero to hero with Jack!

    2009 Splash-In anyone!
