    Fred Lohr | SPLASH - IN NORTH 2008 Bay Bridge Airport (w29) and Breezecroft (05MD) Oct 4,5, & 6

    3213

How about bay bridge airport (W29) for the splashin. paved runway is 2900 feet/ I will be happy to act as a host as my home is about 45 minutes from there. The airport management says we are welcome and there are several hotels/motels restaurants in the immediate area. www.kentisland.cc and it is about 45 minutes from BWI and a little more from DCA in washington. the seaplane ramp is out of service, but so what.there are some nice restaurants that front on the chesapeake bay within walking distance. check it out on airnav.com. the chesapeake offers lots of areas for water landings including the seaplane base at my house (23MD). For those who want to, Annapolis offers a great area to visit on the other side of the bay bridge. I would be happy to host the group at my house sat evening. there are additional places to stay closer to my home in Chestertown MD. www.Chestertown.com. possible dates include sept 12,13 or most weekends in october. any thoughts? other suggestions?

    HI Fred,

I am definitely in for Bay Bridge. I know the area well as my brother lives across the bridge in Annapolis. Also it is just out of the ADIZ so I can fly my non-transponder aircraft there and not get shot down.

I know we talked about this at the Splash-In at Planemakers and all seemed up for it. I like the idea of 2 Splash-In's every year. The spring one in FL at Planemakers got us a little reprive from winter and this one should be great on the Chesapeake Bay.

    Thank you for hosting.

Please post here if you like to join it!

    Happy flying, John

Fred, thanks for taking the lead and hosting this. I look forward to attending but the dates are critical. I'll be on other travel 10/10 - 10/17.

Guys, Fred Lohr has been kind enough to extent an invitation to host the next Seawind Splash-in In Virginia in October. As of this point very few Seawinders or want to be Seawinders have responded to his offer. Please let him know how we all feel about this, as plans need to be made. I for one will be there with bells on. Lets all get behind this . Don't let our Splash-ins die. Tom Saccio N516SW

As of today only 5 people have responded to Fred's E-mail about the splash-in. It is real important to let Fred know who and how many people are coming. Please respond as soon as possible. He has a lot of work to do to set this thing up and it would be nice to give him as much time as possible. We should also know if the date is good and how everyone feels about it. Thanks, Tom Saccio

thanks for the comments. It really is up to the membership as to when and if we have a seawind flyin. from the responses i have recieved, it looks as if late september or early october might be the best time. if there is not enough interest from seawinders to reach a critical mass... no problem, we can do it another time. Or another possibility is to combine it with a gathering of the chesapeake seaplane pilots association. there are lots of people in that group that love seaplanes and seawinds as well they would enjoy the social side of things and could skip the techincal parts. It would be especially nice if we could get dick silva or Paul marshall to come down from PA. any chance of that? I can put this thing together with a few weeks notice since I already have a place to do it.

Ok its official. Seawind flyin in Maryland the weekend of oct 4. Here are the details and preliminary schedule. Location: Bay Bridge Airport (w29) and Breezecroft (05MD). check www.airnav.com for exact location. Nearest major airports BWI or DCA. PHL is OK as well. tentative schedule: arrival and preliminary meeting friday afternoon at Baybridge. If there is interest, friday morning could start with a charter fishing trip on the bay minutes from Bay bridge airport. Plan casual dinner in annapolis or kent island (on the bay). Then spend the nite on Kent Island, or head up to Chestertown,MD. Saturday meet at Baybridge and either drive (45 min) or fly (15) min up to Breezecroft 05MD, near Chestertown,MD. Or land on water at Seaplane base Breezecroft 23MD.Hanger session there about 10 am. with grill for lunch. Flying and kicking tires, then break for afternoon/evening poolside barbecue/picnic. Other seaplane pilots from Chespapeake Seaplane Pilots Association may arrive to seaplane base at Breezecroft (23MD) and join us for social hours. Sunday kick tires in the AM, go for a boat ride, tour chestertown or maybe fly a few minutes up to MD1 to see what is being restored at Massey Aerodrome (masseyaero.org). Baybridge is 2900 by 60 foot paved with clear approaches. Breezecroft 2700 ft turf. Pilots not comfortable with 2700 ft, rolling turf runways should not plan on landing at Breezecroft. This is my home, so pilots planning on landing there will be asked to sign a liability waiver. 100 LL available if absolutely needed. Landing in the water is up to you. Ramp only works at high tide, so tying up on small beach or to floating dock may be required. In the event of inclement weather we will go for it anyway, as we can still meet in the hanger and have social events indoors. There are hundreds of miles of protected coastal waters for seaplane operations within minutes of these two airports. Both are outside the Washington ADIZ so normal vfr operations are no problem. Just don't stray into the ADIZ at DC or camp david on the way in. Also there is an small MOA just west of breezecroft, so call Martin Tower (KMTN) if you will be cutting through from the west or just duck under it. Websites www.Chestertown.com and www.kentisland.cc also www.visitannapolis.org I will see if special rates can be obtained at motels in Kent island for friday and Chestertown for saturday. This will be a new venue for our flyin and i think you will love it. I have invited Paul Marshall to join us. A head count will be needed eventually so respond to my email flohr@dmv.com or to this site. I will ask John Riciotti to send this to his email list of seawind people. The more the merrier so do not pass this one up. The bayside coast of Maryland in the fall is absolutely beautiful. Plus, come see my expanding museum of destroyed seawind landing gear parts!

For those of you interested in the future of the Certified Seawind, make sure you attend our flyin in October. I spoke with Dick Silva after i saw the recent post on the Seawind.biz site. He has kindly agreed to attend the October flyin and tell us what is the latest progress. From a business standpoint, he is looking for the last few investors willing to buy shares to have enough ready capital to complete the testing and duplicate tooling. He will put that money in escrow until ready to go and then forge ahead quickly. But it is better to hear the details from him. Rules require a minimum 150,000 (for 1% stock) but there is nothing to prevent a partnership from buying a share in the event that a few builders wanted to join together. email him if you want more info Rsilva@Seawind.net. I will be interested to hear about the flight characteristics of the certified bird first hand from Dick. This is shaping up to be a great flyin, so don't miss it.

I have a arranged a slightly reduced rate for those of you wishing to stay near the bay bridge airport. The Best Western 410 827 6767 has rooms available and when booking mention the name seawind pilots group to get a small discount to $170/nite. this includes breakfast, pool, etc. The other hotels in the area are almost completely booked, so make reservations now. The town is "stevensville, Md" if you prefer to use hotels.com or mapquest.com to find your own place. If you choose to stay in Chestertown for saturday nite, try one of the B and B's listed at chestertown.com or the comfort suites 410 810 0555, the holiday inn express 877-410-6681 or stay at Great oak landing 410 778 5007 where you can park your seawind at my place and come by boat. These places are getting booked up so make arrangments soon.

I have just made a trip to MERFI (Mid-East Regional Fly In) Urbana, Ohio and found that the Seawind Lovers are not only found in our group "ISPA" but also the general GA comunity and all the wanabes that attend these gatherings. N80CC was voted 1st Place Peoples Choice of all the planes . Let me tell you builders and those flying and thinking about building a a Seawind --The cameras come out and the croward gathers and the comments are "Highly Complementry " They Love our airplane of choice! Now----The heading to Urbana, Ohio is exactly the same that I will be flying in THREE WEEKS TO THE SPLASH IN. I'm planning on leaving early like Oct. 1st and fly the good weather only. Fred--I will load up some of my gear parts and give a summary to the folks as how not to dooo.mmm Looking forward to the trip. Keith Walljasper N80CC

          HI All,

Fred Lohr has sent me a waiver form to post on our website if you want to land at his field. You can see it with this post and you can download it from the link posted here also. For PC users right-click to download the file. For Mac users control-click the link.

I am hoping to fly my Taylorcraft down (weather & schedule permitting...) as I am a few years off from my Seawind being completed.

Please download the form and mail a signed copy back to Fred if you are considering flying to Breezecroft.

Looking forward to seeing you all there!

          Regards, John

Russ and anyone else arriving early. Give me a call on the cell phone 410 708 2527, and i can give you suggestions on where to visit and where to stay (see previous post for hotels) Annapolis and St Michaels are two places worth hitting. For the more adventurous, if you have your plane, fly down to Tangier Island for a day visit. If the weather cooperates, this should be fun, so those of you sitting on the fence make plans to come. Be sure to check Southwest.com for the best fares into BWI as they are not listed on the usual travel sites.

Ok Keith....now I didn't want to jump the gun BUT; The trip home for me was exciting. How you say....Well going thru NY airspace with a crosswind, I L@@Ked once again at the ground speed and again thought something might be wrong,,,SOOooooo I called ATC and asked if he could tell me my Ground Speed... 180knots, hummm thats 206mph...? He proceeded to ask me what I was flying (not tooo busy) of course I "exclaimed with glee...Y a Seawind of course; HXB going to HXC. Anyway he said he has a book and he L@@Ked for the type and couldn't find it. I mentioned that it is a seaplane...Hey ATC guy..not bad for a seaplane - A -. Someone else piped up and asked if it had pontoons. I said you have to "google it to belive it". They said they would. Wanna know the best part.......I was running at 67% power...YEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAA. I was so proud I gave her a bubble bath when I got home..!!

PS...Keith....The Race Is On Next Year..!!

As always, we had a great time. It was great to see you all again and we missed the ones that couldn't make it this year. Orbitz jockied around our flight around and we had to leave early. Looking forward to seeing you at the next one.

              Thanks again Fred.

              Be well,

I couldn't agree more with all the comments. Fred was the most gracious host and even provided excellent weather to fly down and back from New Hampshire. Although I couldn't do it in the fine style of Keith or Mike. Someday!!!

As always, it was great to see all the Seawinders together. What a great group we have. Thanks again Fred for all your hospitality in the most picturesque setting possible. It was a fantastic weekend!

              Regards, John
