I decided to modify in my canopy latch handles to make the action simpler but with a little bit of aerodynamic penalty. I think it's worth it. I'm sure most of you are aware of the one accident where it was critically important that bystanders be able to open the canopy as fast as possible after an accident. My modified handles for the latch protrude from the canopy and make simple 160° turns to unlatch the mechanism. A curved arrow decal on the side of the fuselage will quickly give anyone unfamiliar with Seawinds the direction to unlatch the canopy.

To lock the handle, I use the same cabinet lock that I had initially installed. I made a specialized tab that goes through the handle and the latch pocket cover. The tab has a notch in it that the locking arm fits into when locked.

I haven't finish filled the handle surface yet. The pictures start on the left side with the handle open, progressing to show the latch pocket cover, closed position, and the specialized tab used to lock the handle. After unlocking, the tab attaches to the key ring. The last picture is on the right side of the canopy.

For that matter, can someone tell me how the kitplane latches were designed? The miscellaneous pile of parts I received bear little resemblance to the pages in my manuals. The type of hook received appears to need some kind of cam action to pull down after swinging into position. Nothing in the box suggested that. There is a large notch at the front of the control console and a piece of tubing that suggests a system connected to both sides, but what?
